On Wednesday the 16th of April our Executive Director, Mr. Rex Chapota, hosted the National Coordinator of the National Association of Young People Living with HIV Y+ Malawi Ms. Elina Mwasinga, and her team for an engagement meeting on the operations of the Association.
The courtesy call was made to update our Executive Director on the Association’s work, the current state of affairs, and to explore areas in which NYCOM may provide support.
During the discussion, Mr. Chapota noted a significant gap: the National Association of Young People Living with HIV is currently not among NYCOM’s affiliates—an omission that has affected the Association’s participation in NYCOM activities and decision-making structures such as the Annual General Assembly.
“It does not make sense to have an organised group of young people living with HIV outside the established mechanisms of NYCOM—especially at a time when the NYCOM Strategic Plan has prioritised Youth Health and Nutrition, and the Government of Malawi has increased funding to NYCOM from 300 million Kwacha to 6 billion Kwacha for youth engagement, empowerment, and development,”* Mr. Chapota emphasized.
He stressed that while NYCOM exists to serve all young people in Malawi, it is particularly important that organised youth-led structures like Y+ be formally affiliated with the Council. To this end, he has directed the Director of Programmes, Mr. Williot Lumbe, to facilitate and fast-track the Association’s registration process.
The National Association of Young People Living with HIV exists to empower young people living with HIV to access quality healthcare and socio-economic services. The Association operates through youth structures across the country and has over 4,000 young members.
