On the 17th of May the National Youth Council of Malawi (NYCOM) is participating in the Mindset Change SCOM – Student Christian Organisation of Malawi Conference in Blantyre under the theme “Transformational Leadership Among Student Leaders in Tertiary Institutions.”
This important engagement is aligned with Pillar 2 of our Strategic Plan on Youth Participation, Leadership and Inclusion, which promotes inclusive youth leadership—particularly through the development and implementation of mindset change programs for youth.
The event has brought together over 60 student leaders from the University of Malawi – UNIMA , Malawi University Of Science and Technology (MUST), Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences- MUBAS (MUBAS), and other tertiary institutions. The goal is to imbue them with the tools for transformational leadership, empowering them to lead change both within and beyond their campuses.
The first presentation dwelled on Malawi 2063 (MW2063)—exploring what the vision is all about and breaking down its key pillars: agricultural productivity and commercialisation, industrialisation, and urbanisation. This session was presented by Madalitso Chambukira and helped frame the bigger picture of national development that student leaders are being called to contribute to.
Representing NYCOM, Naomi Mkanthama delivered a presentation on “The Role of Youth in National Development.” She gave an overview of what NYCOM is, our objectives, and shared insights into our Strategic Plan and Pillars, while encouraging the student leaders to explore how they can get involved in our work and ongoing youth initiatives.
The overall response from the students was fantastic. There was great enthusiasm and keenness to get involved in NYCOM’s work, with many questions focusing on opportunities under the Youth Innovation Fund and how to participate in the upcoming National Youth Summit.
As NYCOM, we are excited to see such energy and interest from young leaders. We believe that mindset change starts with empowered student leadership, and we remain committed to working with them to drive meaningful youth development across the country.
